Rome Total War 2 Battle Difficulty Easy Vs Normal

  1. #1

    Default Campaign and battle difficulty

What are the different between campaign and battle difficulty easy, normal, Hard, Very Hard and legendary? What are the gains... What bonuses do you get and the computer... I dont want the computer to cheat... Which campaign difficulty should l choose?

This is about Rome total war 2 or II. Just so you know

The campaign: the usual, anything above normal, the AI gets cash, happiness, resource, movement point, research bonuses and extra recruitment slots (+ extra army slots on VH and legendary) and supposedly is more aggressive against the player. The latter part though I have not experienced to any significant degree. Diplomatic AI is quite reasonable even on legendary difficulty.

Battle-wise, I do not sense much difference between normal and legendary. Maybe the AI gets some morale bonuses (it is a tad, not much, harder to rout AI units on legendary), but melee wise: pretty much the same as normal. Missiles is a different story: the AI will outshoot the player in any legendary difficulty duel with the same quality units [supposedly major reload time, accuracy bonuses kick in].

All in all, I'd suggest legendary as long as you are fine with living through a few lags in siege battles. The lags happen when many units get into choke points. One way to resolve these lags is to use TAB to open the tactical overview map, then switch back to normal view. On legendary, the tactical overview map (and radar) is absent.

So you are saying that if its normal difficulty or easy on campaign then the AI gets nothing... no bonuses, no cash or anything else? and if its hard and very hard and legendary difficulty on campaign then the AI gets cash, bonuses etc?

also if you want to play with AI who doesnt cheat then you will have to play easy or normal difficulty on campaign?

Yes, this is true. if you want an AI that does not get bonuses you have to play on normal. On Easy, the player gets bonuses though.

Normal is ridiculously easy in RTW 2 though.

What does the AI get if l am playing on difficulty hard?

This was what S2 got for hard difficulty - "On the battlefield the tables have now turned: the AI begins to get bonuses to its accuracy, morale and melee attack values. The player receives nothing." It's quite possible the enemy get extra recruitment slot/s as well. I'm not suggesting this is correct but I suspect CA have followed the same formula.

Yes, the problem with that one is that the battle bonuses mentioned are from Rome 1 not Rome 2

I have brought that to the attention of the video owner.

So, what are the battle bonus in Rome 2? I read your (Slaists) previous post talking about your experience but I was wondering if there was something more... scientific.

"We will bring Rome to them not because of the strength of our legions, but because we are right"

"The Romans had left marble and stone, brick and glory."

Haven't found anything yet... Except the bits by Jack Lusted (CA) who claimed some time ago, that the AI gets no bonuses on harder difficulties... The missile versus missile tests say otherwise.

On Legendary I haven't seen any serious disparity between my units and enemy units. Maybe there is some difference on missile units, but I rarely did prolonged missile duels.
And in Rome 2, higher levels of difficulty affects base public order (from 14 on easy to 6(?) on legendary), increased corruption gain (on easy capturing new province barely brings any corruption, while on legendary corruption increase is noticable). Also on Easy you gain lowered upkeep by 10%.

I know that you said that the AI doesnt cheat if l (meaning the player) play on normal difficulty on campaign but do l (meaning the player) on normal difficulty on campaign get bonuses etc....?

On normal, I believe, we are not supposed to get any bonuses, neither is the AI.

There is a difficulty related population "happiness" bonus but that stays positive even on legendary difficulty so you can consider it as a "no-bonus": just the default setting.

So you are saying that we dont get anything like bonuses on normal difficulty on campaign? except from getting happiness bonuses on normal difficulty on campaign and higher difficulty like hard on campaign and easy difficulty on campaign and then its probably me (meaning the player) who gets happiness bonuses and not the AI on easy difficulty on campaign? do you know if we (meaning the player) and the AI gets anything from playing hard difficulty on campaign?

Just to clear my mind... if we dont want to cheat on campaign and on battle and we dont want the AI to cheat on campaign and on battle then normal difficulty is what we are looking for?

plz dont forget to answer all my questions including about the hard difficulty.... if you know what l mean

On higher difficulties the AI battle bonuses are insane. It makes skirmishing useless unless you have overwhelming numbers since the AI's skirmishers will shred yours in a 1:1 fight. If they bring field artillery, forget it.
